MTV Exit Concert

It was the big night ever. It was 12.12. 2008 at Olympic stadium. It was my first time to join the concert, and it is very meaningful to me. I start to know more about exploitation and trafficking. Before we decide to do sth, we should know the detail about it. We all have rights to be free. Protect yourself, family and friends. I really enjoy that concert, but unfortunately i cant stay till the end of show because it was too late at night. I wish to see THE CLICK 5, but the band showed up around the mid-night. I have to go home . It was so sad for me to walk out of the staduim quietly. I love this concert. All stars were gattering at one spot with perfect smile and proud. We are so proud with this. We all together to end exploitation and trafficking. Thank you MTV Exit concert tour. I am so happy. U no everybody who joined this concert seem to be very happy. Some is dance along and some is sing along the music with alot of screaming and shouting. Wow it is so awesome and it was the wonderful night ever. Yeha Yeha...

Impact of Poor Sanitation on Health in Cambodia

This topic was taken from World bank, Water and Sanitation Programme

For the whole of Cambodia, less than one person in four (22%) enjoys access to an improved househole latrine, ranging from 16% of rural dwellers to 56% of urban dwellers. Almost three-quarters (70%) of Cambodians- over ten million people- still use open defecation as their principle sanitation option. Having an unsafe latrine or no latrine at all causes higher rates of disease transmission, contributes to water and land pollution, leads to indignity and loss of population welfare, and has range of other indirect effects which affect overall economic and social development in Cambodia.
A recent study by the World Bank's Water and Sanitation Programme estimated the economic losses due to poor sanitation and hygiene in Cambodia exceed US$450 million anually, amounting to some 7% of Cambodia's GDP in 2005. The per capita economic cost is approximately US$ 30.
Economic costs related to the health impacts of poor sanitation are estimated at roughly US$190 million, representing 40% of the total cost. This is followed by water pollution costs ( US$ 150 million), loss to tourism (US$75 million), and time loss due to poor sanitation access (US$40 million).
Many diseases are transmitted through contact with human feces and poor hygiene, including diarrheal disease (eg. cholera, typoid), intestinal parasites (eg. helminthes), eye diseases (eg. tracoma) and skin diseases. The 'F' diagram below shows pathogens are passed from Feces directly through 'Fingers', 'Flies', 'Fluid', and 'Field' to the new host, or is transmitted to the new host through another F- 'Food'. These diseases- mainly fecal-oral in nature- are very common in Cambodia.
Freuent sicknesses- especially in children- lead to higher rates of malnutrition. 35% of young children in Cambodia are moderately or severly malnourished. Malnutrition reduces the ability to participate in daily activities, and affects immunity to other diseases.
Annually at least 10 million cases of disease occur due to poor sanitation and hygiene in Cambodia, causing around 10 thousand deaths.
National surveys show that children underfive years old suffer oin average at least 4 cases of diarrheal disease per year. Disease rates are closely linked to the type of latrine families use, how feces are disposed of, and household hygiene pratices.
Disease have many costs. Patients seek to treat their disease either through formal care (doctor or nurse), an informal health provider, they ask at the parmacy. Poor hosueholds are often short of cash funds and must borrow money.
Also, sickness takes asults away from their daily work and children lose school time.
Health care and productivity costs due to poor sanitation and hygiene are worth US$20 million per annum (6000 Riels per capita).
While Cambodia has achieved reduction in child mortality in recent years,it still has one of the highest rates in Asia. Premature death leads to loss of income. The 10,000 premature deaths related to poor sanitation cost the country at least US$ 170 million per year.
Life also has inherent value. Death causes emotional distress to family and friends. These costs are hard to quantify in money terms, but they are perhaps the most important.

The earth belongs to us all

Rethink
- One little think may lead to unexpected results.
- Think well before every action, as it all counts.
Respect

Why do students miss the class?

Cambodia is a poor country, so it needs the educational people to lead the country to develop country. Education is one of the most important roles in society. Nowadays students in Cambodia study without school fees in public school, but the students still miss the class everyday. We can’t blame this entire fault to students. In fact, this fault is involved with teachers and their family as well. Teachers are lack of teaching method and poor control by their parents. Moreover, bribe and corruption are happened in the class and school there they are studying. For instance, teachers have got money from them and force students to pay them. Some students are poor and no money, and make them afraid teachers and miss the class. I have surveyed from many rich families and poor families. Family faces a main factor to do this also. Sometimes violence happens in the family because of the argument of their parents. “The family has already made them afraid. How about the environment of school? “No money no studying” said by teachers. How about rich families? Some families are busy with their work and business and ignore their kids studying by depend on teachers. Till their kids make troubles. Environment stands as a main condition as well. After the western culture had flown to our country, the kids start to mess up with clothing and studying. We decide to survey about students miss the class. Many results are found.

The environment

The environment is being damaged by air and water pollution. Many species of wild life are endangered as a result of deforestation and acid rain. Environmentalists are also concerned about global warming and the hole in the ozone layer. We can conserve the Earth’s resource (= coal, oil, etc) by recycling more waste and by using renewable energy such as solar power (= from the sun) and hydro- electric power ( =from water).

Half of anti-malaria drugs found to be fake

Malaria is one of the world’s most dangerous diseases, claiming millions of victims every year.
The usual medication against it consists of pills containing 50mg of Artemisin and a synthetic derivative Artesunate. An international team of scientists has now made a full investigation into fake malarial medicines, which are sold throughout Southeast Asia and followed the supply route.
From 1999 to 2006, with the help of Interpol, local police and the World Health Organization, the team investigated 391 stocks of medicine. Most of which did not contain any of the essential active ingredients at all. Of the ones that did, the strongest medication found contained only 12mg of anti-malarial drugs. The search for the sources of these drugs ended in Yunnan province in China.
Malaria is common in Cambodia, Burma, and Laos, and half of all pills available in these countries today are thought to be fake. The active ingredients contained in these fakes are too low to cure the disease, but high enough to enable the parasites to develop resistance to the drug, making any future treatment ineffectual.
“If malaria becomes resistant to Artesunate, the effect on the public health in the tropics will be catastrophic,” said Dr Paul Newton the investigation’s leader.

Garlic

Garlic has been used for thousand of years as a food medicine in many cultures. Garlic has a reputation in folklore for preventing everything from the common cold and flu to the Plague!
Something of wonder vegetable, garlic lowers cholesterol, reduces the risk of heart disease, fights infection and boosts immunity. It also provides a unique flavor to food and is considered indispensable to many styles of cooking.
It was Louis Pasteur, a French chemist, who first isolated garlic’s antibacterial properties, and garlic juice was used as a common treatment for gangrene during the First World War.
Modern science has shown that garlic is powerful antibiotic, albeit broad-spectrum rather than targeted. The body does not appear to build up resistance to garlic, so its positive health benefits continue over time. As more and more antibiotics are becoming useless due to over-prescription and side effects, garlic could have a role to play in modern medicine.
The antibiotic properties of garlic are a direct result of the allicin produced from raw, crushed garlic. As well as its antibiotic effect, allicin is an excellent anti-fungal and has been used to treat skin infections such as athlete’s foot.
Allicin is destroyed by age and cooking- cooked garlic has virtually no antibiotic value although it still retains other benefits. Regular garlic consumption appears to prevent the buildup of fatty plaque in the arteries and may even shrink exiting plaque.
Additionally, garlic is also considered an effective antioxidant that can boost the body’s immune system and may even help prevent certain cancers such as stomach and colon cancers.
Garlic is powerful and needs to be treated with respect, eating too much could produce problems, for example irritation of the digestion tract. Some people prefer to take garlic supplement. Garlic can interfere with operation of anti-coagulants.
If you enjoy the taste of it, use garlic liberally in your food. If the taste and odour turn you off, opt for deodorized garlic capsules. Either way, garlic is good for your health.

King of the Road

The cyclo is not unique to Phnom Penh but, perhaps more than anywhere else, it remains one if the city’s trademarks.
Towering above most other traffic, the long legs of the riders propel what look like ungainly and antiquated machines with an aura of grace that reminds us of a bygone age. These men and their back to front tricycles really are the kings of the Asian road.
Today there are more than 3,000 cyclo-drivers working in Phnom Penh carrying all manner of people and goods. Many of them are among the city’s poorest and least privileged denizens.
Often hailing from rural areas and with few other skills, they eke out a life of a few dollars a day, returning to their villages only at planting or harvesting time. Many have no real accommodation in Phnom Penh and spend their nights sleeping in their cyclos along the roads and pavements.
The Kings of the Roads is a coffee-table book; but in so being it invites the casual reader to take a closer look at the daily lives of cyclo drivers and to learn about some of the really positive initiatives being implemented to alleviate the living conditions of this underprivileged but hardworking section of the community.

The weather

Drops of water that fall from the sky are called rain. When it’s raining very hard it’s pouring. When it’s only raining slightly it is drizzling. Snow is frozen rain that is soft and white. Sleet is rain that is not completely frozen. Small balls of ice that fall like rain are called hail. Fog is like a cloud close to the ground and is difficult to see through. When we talk about the weather, we often say “its lovely beautiful/ horrible/ terrible day”, isn’t it? If you want to know what the weather is going to be like, you can watch or listen to the weather forecast.

War

The three main parts of a country's armed forecd are the army, the navy, the air force. Officers in the forces give orders to their troops. When a war break out (= starts) two or more countries are at war. A war between different groups in the same country is called a CIVIL WAR. A country's enemies are the countries it is fighting againt and its allies are the countries which support it. If armed forces from one country enter another country, they incvade it. If they stay htere and take control of the country they occupy it. A country will try to defend itself againt attack fro another country. At the end of a war one country is defeated and surrenders (stop fighting and says that it is lost).
